Minutes of Meeting – May 14, 2002
Members Present: 12
Board Members Present: 2

Cecile Thompson called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. Cecil introduced Carrie Coleman, last year’s scholarship recipient. Carrie wanted to attend the meeting to personally thank the members for the scholarship fund and to let us know how our money has helped with her education. Carrie is juggling a dual major – Veterinary Science and Music – and is also participating in MED, a service organization benefiting the community, which could become an honor society for Carrie further in her education.

Minutes of last month’s meeting were read by Betty McDonald (as Kim Willis had not yet arrived). Pam Thompson motioned that the minutes be approved; Sissy Dockins seconded; motion carried. The treasurer was not present, so no report was provided.

Old Business

Jane Brewer provided information through Cecile regarding her Special Olympics’ student, Linsey Foster. Lindsey is participating in the Trail Class at the Special Olympics on November 9, 2002 at Wills Park. She will need boots, shirt, helmet and special stirrups with covers. Pam offered to provide the stirrups and a properly sized helmet. Jane also asked that the club include a Trail Class in the next Fun Show so that Lindsey could have some experience in competition in a show ring environment. Jane volunteered to design and build the necessary obstacles for this class. All members present agreed that it was a good idea.

Kim Willis reviewed the upcoming Biggerstaff clinic on June 22nd. She gave a brief synopsis of the flyer and stated that it would be emailed or mailed with this month’s newsletter.

Valerie Addicott brought a brochure from the Mountain Patrol Open Horse Show as a sample of what we could do with our upcoming pointed shows. Classes were sponsored by various local businesses and members felt that it would be ideal if we could do likewise. By doing so we could also improve the quality of our ribbons or provide attractive trophies. Further discussion regarding fun show dates and the showmanship clinic were tabled by Valerie until the June meeting.

Sissy Dockins reported that she has confirmed September 28th at the campground for the St. Jude’s ride. Kim Willis will contact St. Jude’s to inform

them of our date and will provide the sponsorship sheets to Sissy so that she can have them distributed at the August Rockdale Riding Club’s meeting. Sissy is unsure whether the campground owner will provide the site at no cost. Sissy suggested that riders be required to check-in with a specific person to submit their sponsorship list. If a rider has no sponsors, then they will be required to pay for the ride. There is a disc jockey willing to donate his time for a dance on Friday and Saturday night and breakfast is available on Saturday morning for $5.00 per person.

Violet Thompson made a motion to continue supporting Carrie Coleman with scholarship funds. Valerie Addicott seconded; motion carried.

New Business

Pam Thompson suggested that we schedule a "social" event for the club members. We will hold a covered dish picnic at the Rec Department on Sunday, June 9th, at 4:00 p.m. The club will provide the meat and drinks and Dwayne Thompson will cook. This event will be for members, their families and their horses since we will reserve the riding ring as well as the two pavilions.

The door prize this month was provided by American Grade Horse Registry, a Valerie Addicott brain-child. This registry is intended for horses with no discernible parentage or formal papers, as well as a site for slaughterhouses to check prior to destroying horses. For additional information, please visit www.AGHR.com. The door prize was a beautiful Stars & Stripes saddle pad, which was won by Kim Willis. Thank you, Valerie!

Next month’s door prize will be provided by our newest member, Tricia Stockton of Sole Place. Tricia said she will bring "something you’ll all want." So, be there to find out!

With no new business to conduct, Pam Thompson motioned that the meeting be adjourned; Charlotte Thomas seconded; motioned carried and meeting was ended at 8:25 p.m.

Next meeting is June 11, 2002 at 7:30p.m.
