My R/C design "Cold Duck", designed in 1969 and published in the June 1971 RCM Magazine. Powered by a Veco 61 with a two gear CAS retractable gear system. Wing span 61", length 51 1/2", wing area 656 sq in, flying weight with retract gear system approximately 6 1/2 lbs. Plans are available from RCM Magazine plans service. My R/C design "Century", designed in 1970. Powered by a Webra 61 Black Head with a three gear CAS retractable gear system and fully flying horizontal stabilizer . One of the early R/C pattern aircraft with a full flying horizontal stab. Wing span 62 1/2", length 52", wing area 650 sq. in., flying weight with retract gear system 7 1/4 lbs. The center image is the award wining original design at the 1971 Northwest R/C Symposium. The yellow and black aircraft in the background is Ralph Brooks' Gladiator. Plans available from Mike Dailey

The P51 and my orange Howard Engineering Kwik Fli III taper wing at the Northwest R/C symposium in the early 70s. The Kwik Fli was powered by a Webra 61 Blackhead and used CAS tri retract units activated with Sonic-Tronic air cylinders.
Standard J1 - scratch built and flown for the making of the1974 TV documentary film "Noel Wien". Noel was the founder of Wien Air Alaska. The model was used to film and recreate the story of the start-up of Wien Air Alaska when Noel Wien bought the original Standard J1 for the first aircraft for Wien Air Alaska. The film work and production of the documentary was done by Frank Brink of Anchorage, Alaska. The camera was run at a higher speed during the filming of the model to create a very realistic image of the Standard J1 in flight. The film work was done in Washington state with much of the filming done in Eastern Washington for the bright sun light. The model was powered by a fully enclosed HP 61 without a muffler and used a Kraft radio. All of the controls were operated with scale wires and pulleys including the walking beam for the elevator and a fully functioning control stick. The model was scale down to the last detail of Noel's Standard J1 including the modified radiator and the prop tied to the top of the lower wing. A Joy Jenny kit was used supply the wood pieces to speed up the building of the model. A lot of work was done with an air brush to age the completed model. The Standard J1 received an award for its construction at the 1974 Northwest R/C Symposium. The Standard J1 is currently owned by Noel's son, Merrill and as he said "is one of his prized possessions".

My Howard Engineering Kwik Fli III taper wing. It is powered by a Irvine 61 ABC and has tri gear Rom-Air retracts. I still have the original Webra 61 Blackhead that was in my first Kwik Fli.
I originally built this kit thirty years ago as a second backup Kwik Fli and had everything completed except for the painting. The aircraft spent the next thirty years in the Howard Engineering shop until it was given back to me recently as a wonderful gift from the past. Unfortunately it was severely damaged in shipment and I’ve constructed a new wing and repaired the damaged fiberglass fuselage. See my rebuild of the Kwik Fli III on the RC Universe website.
