Lada Roadster

The new Lada Roadster was one of the most interesting concept cars at the Moscow International Motor Show 2000. Every person that looked at it asked if this car was going into production and how much will it cost. Unfortunately it is not that simple to answer that question. The market for this car needs to be researched; the designers need to find out the price that is suitable for a car of this class. For example, the car can have seats made in a foreign country or just use one from other Lada cars. The hard top can be changed into a soft top to lower cost or even be made so is will go down manually. Right now the top folds down neatly by the use of two electric motors into the trunk compartment. Also the suspension will be taken from Lada Kalina but re-designed to give a more responsive feel that is usual in sports cars. To tell you the truth, this car is a great vehicle that can compete well in the sub-compact, compact sports car market. The car has good performance characteristics, low fuel consumption, and a great design done by the British design firm Sbarro. The basic suspension mechanisms, engine, and transmission were borrowed from the Kalina, which is a compact hatchback that will soon be produced by Lada. For the show the car does not have an actual suspension, closer to the truth, it just a suspension imitator made out of combination of plastic and metal. Under the hood lies a 2.0 litre 16-valve engine that is capable of producing 105 horse power that can propel the roadster to 100 km/h in 9 seconds, not bad, not great but not bad. I am not sure why did Lada offer a 2.0 litre unit, when it has a 1.6 litre engine that makes the same power out put as the 2.0 litre. Several people at the show compared the car to Audi TT, but the cars have almost nothing in common. The TT is a sports coupe that is much larger, more expensive, and much more powerful than the roadster. Its usual buyers are ones that are willing to spend about $30-50k for this joy ride in their mid 20 through yearly 40. Lada on the other hand is a compact sports car that offers a fun ride at a very low cost and its buyers are their yearly 20s and 30s. Actually, the roadster has competitors like Fiat, Renault, Ford, Rover, and some other European manufacturers that produce relatively inexpensive sport cars for the average buyer. So what is the expected price of this vehicle? Between 10k and 15k US dollars. Some even tried to buy the car at the show as a concept. So when will we see this wonder on our roads?s that are willing to spend about $30-50k for this joy ride in their mid 20 through yearly 40.
