GAZ Volga 3103, the elegance of prestige

In the 50�s the name Volga was a pinnacle of Russian automotive engineering. And here is another Volga from GAZ. It used to be that the name Volga stood for one car like Accord and Taurus but now it incorporates more than 5 different vehicles that range in price and comfort. It�s a big step for GAZ because GAZ specializes in building cars with rear wheel drive and this one has front wheel drive. Under the hood is a ZMZ-406 engine that produces about 160 hp. The engine is longitudinal and lies behind the front axle like in the Honda S2000. This gives a very good balance but the designers also had to fit the transmission that is now located at the left of the engine. Correct specifications are unknown since GAZ didn�t officially tell us yet. I expect the acceleration to be between 8 and 11 seconds. The car looks a longer than other Volga�s but it is only 30 cm longer than GAZ 3110. The rear suspension is unequal independent in the rear. This design, although complex, has been proven to give a more comfortable and soft ride. The trunk has a volume of about 700 litres, which isn�t too bad for a car of this class. The interior was also re-designed to fit the new vehicle. Although there is an abundance of plastic, the interior still looks original and certainly not cheap. The roominess in the back seat has also been improved, now you are not able to touch the front seats with your knees unless you are a professional basketball player. It was expected that this car would go into production in the year 2000, now it�s in 2002-2004.
