Foreign cars that are sold in Russia are built in the Russian Federation for one basic reason, which is not to pay taxes. Prices on these vehicles drop by 20-30% because they are brought in as "spear parts" and are not considered to be a whole car. This is a list of vehicles I know that currently Russia builds or actually assembles.
Foreign Cars
BMW 5-series - Built in Kalingrad which is a piece of land bordering Germany. Its cars are usualy bought by government officials in Russia. The price is about 45,000 US dollars which is alot less than if the same car was brought from Germany to Russia.
Land Rover
Chevy Blazer - Builds SUV's that are currently popular in Russia today. Mostly because of good manuverability, affordable price, and good quality.

Russian Cars
VAZ (Lada in the rest of the world). Made its reputation by building Italian cars. The Fiat 124 was made under a licence and rebadged in Russia as Vaz -2101. Later built its cars on the same Fiat base from 1970 to present. Now known as "classic" Lada's, they still have a demand in Some parts of Russia and in South America, Eastern europe, Africa, Australia, Middle East. Classic Lada's, which include VAZ 2101,2102,2104,2105,2107, have a reputation of bieng built like a tank. Although not too powerful, they have their own style for which Russia now has of reputation of bulding bow-like cars. The production is slowly stoping to make room for new Lada vehicles like VAZ 2110, 2112, 2115, 2131. Now, VAZ is building subcompact, compact, and comapct SUV's that are strangly popular all over the world. I never had a chance of driving one so I can't say why are they popular. As I hear, they have off-road capabilities that only some 4x4 can compete with.
GAZ is the only producer in Russia of mass-produced prestige vehicles. In the Soviet era, GAZ Volga was a sign of your wealth. Today, if a man or a women is driving the latest Mercedeses and BMW, the chances are that at some point of theur lives they drove a Volga. As started out as just an average model, Volga now has a whole class of vehicles that range from a cheap sedan of about $4,000 to one of the pinicles of human automotive enginering at a base prise of $90,000 dollars. Also Gaz has become known because of the half-ton trucks they produce. Cheap and simple, the trucks help transport goods that range from argicultural products to High-tech computers and valuable metals.
