| You are in this class because you have chosen to learn about art. The only way to learn about art is to practice and to produce art. All students are expected to come to class prepared and ready to work on art. You will be expected to spend your time in class working on art, discussing art, planning and thinking about art. There is more to learn about art than you can possibly hope to achieve in the few small years you have in high school and college. You must not waste any of that time that you are granted.
We will be working this semester on various class projects: drawing and painting, printmaking, pottery, mosaic, and sculptures. Outside of the class projects you will also have weekly sketches and journals to do. Additionally, we will start working on electronic art portfolios this semester. There should be no lack of work to keep you busy. Participation Points Each day that you are in class you will be assessed and will earn points reflecting your participation in art activities. These participation points are approximately one quarter of your total grade in art. The points I record will sometimes be accompanied by short anecdotal remarks in my gradebook as a record of what you worked on that day. These points and observations should correspond to what you log in the journal portion of your sketchbook each day. The points you will earn for participation are as follows: A= 3 pts. Student is engaged in class activities all hour, and needs no direction from teacher. B= 2.5 pts. Student is engaged in class activities most of the hour, and needs little direction from teacher. C= 2.2 pts. Student is engaged in class activities most of the hour, but needs more direction from teacher. D= 1.9 pts. Student is engaged only minimally in class activities, and needs significant attention from teacher. F= 0 pts. Student remains unengaged in class activities, even after significant attention from teacher. Non-Participation Students that come into class and refuse to participate will be subject to the following disciplinary actions. 1) If your total percentage in the area of participation falls below seventy percent (see D= 1.9 pts. above) during any quarter you and your parents will be notified. 2) If you are not engaged in art activities during class you will earn a zero for that day. In addition, you may earn a detention or be removed to the office if you are defiant and refuse to get to work when I direct you to. 3) Upon the second occurrence of your refusal to comply with my directions to be actively engaged in class activities, you will be removed from class to the office and your parents will be notified. 4) If you have to be removed from class again, there will be a conference with you, your parents, the principal and me to determine whether you will be allowed to return to class. If the decision is made that you are to be permanently removed from class, you will receive an F in art and receive no credit for the class. 5) There are no prerequisites to be in Art I and 2. Anyone can take this first class. Advanced art classes (III-VI+) have a single prerequisite: Instructor approval. If you dont do your work while you are in art I and 2, dont expect to get my approval to be in Art 3. I want you to be in this class and to learn about art and what it is like to be an artist. A huge part of that experience involves being engaged in class and what you are making - and doing it every day. Do not expect to pass this class, to get credit for this class, or even to remain in this class if you sit and do nothing. |
