Art 3 and 4: Each week you will draw an observed sketch of a subject of your choosing. Drawing from observation provides practice in developing your ability to see what is actually there and translating that to the paper. This is the very best kind of practice you can use to enhance your drawing skills. You will do 8 sketches per quarter.

Art 5, 6 and beyond: Each week you will draw a sketch of a subject of your choosing. These may be:
a. Drawn from a picture out of a book or a magazine
b. Drawn from your own observation of an object or objects
c. Drawn from your imagination

Evaluation
I look for drawings that are complete, that have obviously had some time spent on them and were not just done in a rush.
I like to see drawings that make good use of the picture plane and fill the page. Pictures should not be a small speck in the middle of the page.
I like to be able to see your work, so make sure that you draw it dark.

I grade your sketches using 2 basic norms:

A) How good your work looks compared to the work of other students at your level of competency (grade, age, class level). This norm is not quite as important to me, as everyone has different skills and abilities.

B) How good your work looks compared to the work that you have already done. I feel that this is the much more important norm, because I am assessing how well you are doing compared to your own potential. There should be a difference between your work in art 1 and similar work done in art 4. This difference should show an improvement and not a decline.
