What is a zine?: A zine is a small publication, usually photocopied, usually assembled by hand. Zines can have an audience of twenty neighborhood friends, or thousands of people around the world, depending upon the author's preference. Zines are usually made by a single person or a small group of people. The content of zines varies from personal to political to music reviews to just about anything.
Why I love zines: I support zine culture because it sheds light on the human experience, and is also cuddly and wonderful. I love zines, because in this medium I have discovered people who are making art for other people, and still maintaining a sense of individual identity therein, sometimes so transparently so that you actually feel you get to know the person. I love zines because people of any age, social class, political view, or belief system can voice their opinion to the world.
My vision for zines: There should be a shelf full of zines in every bookstore across the country. There is a place for books, which can take years to write. There is a place for magazines with tremendously large production staffs. There should be a place for material that may not be four-color process printed, but still has a beauty in its message, in the simplicity(or complexity) of its art, and is just as much worth the two dollars. Zines will become such a widely appreciated format that everyone from your neighbor's grandmother to your babysitter will have their favorite zinesters, and will look forward to the release of the latest issue, just as one looks forward to the upcoming movies.
