Sailing the Firth of Clyde

Cambeltown
Cambeltown is famous in song and history.  The harbor is open and handles large ships.  There is a town dock that was crowded on the day we arrived so we dropped an anchor in the nothern portion of the harbor and took the dingy ashore.  There is an excellent small museum with maritime and archeologic displays from the region.  That night we were entertained by a crew off an Irish fishing boat coming back from the pub.
The next morning we got underway and  rounded Pladda Light at the tip of Arran and sailed to Lamlash.
Lamlash Arran
The anchorage at Lamlash is huge but well protected by Holy Isle.  During World War II, it served as a Royal Navy anchorage.  The  town has a great dingy landing.  There is an active fishing fleet and a ferry that runs across the harbor to Holy Isle.
Brodick Castle Arran
In the morning, after breakfast we left Lamlash and motored to Brodick anchored, and took a bus up to Brodick Castle.  The castle was the former home of the Duke of Hammilton.  Portions of the castle date to the 13th century.  After lunch and a tour, we returned to the boat for a sail back to Milport for shore leave and laundry.
Michael Hughes joined us Sunday evening and we got underway in the early evening and sailed for Kames Bay on Butte but on arriving found the samall harbor full and turned back to Rothesay Bay..  The following day, we picked
Andrew Glenn and sailed up the Kyles of Butte.  We were able to get a mooring at Collintraive.  The following day a gail warning caused us to change plans and we motored to Tarbert to weather the storm.  We rafted on the town dock the first night but preferred the quiet of a mooring and picked one up the second night.   The last run was a day sail home to Milport with a lunch stop at Inchmarnock.

The trip was outstanding thanks to our host Robin Graham.  Robin is an excellent sailor, piper, cook and companion.  The area offers a mix of scenic sailing, intersting ports and anchorages and friendly people.  It is truly a cruising paradise.
