Hunter Safety Tips

There is nothing more important in hunting
than safety. Of course, this is no
revolutionary new idea, but a common-sense
fact proven over years of in-the-field
experience. During this time, hunters have
established their own "Ten Commandments."
The following list of safety rules was
designed to make hunting a safe and
rewarding experience. They could save your
life.

1.
Every Gun is A Loaded One. You can never
guarantee the rifle or shotgun you're
cradling is empty, so give it the respect
you'd give a loaded firearm.

2.
Watch Your Muzzle. Know and control your
muzzle direction at all times. A loaded gun
can accidentally fire with a single,
unexpected jar, so watch your step and your
muzzle.

3.
Check It All Out. Before you load, make
sure your barrel is free of obstructions.
Also double check your ammunition to make
sure its specifications match those of your
gun.

4.
Know Your Target! Before you consider
squeezing off a round make sure you select
and identify your target! Prepare yourself
by studying identifying features of your
game before heading outdoors.

5.
Don't Load Before You're Ready. Why take
chances before your hunt? When traveling,
take down or have all actions open, and
always carry firearms unloaded in their
cases.

6.
Remember It's Real. Avoid horseplay, and
never point a firearm where you don't want
to shoot.

7.
Don't Press Your Luck. Never leap
fences, jump ditches or make awkward or
unbalanced moves while holding a loaded
firearm. Never pull a gun toward you by the
muzzle!

8.
Watch Your Target Practice. When
shooting for practice, avoid targeting
hard, flat surfaces or shooting on water.
Make sure your backdrop is more than
adequate to protect unseen bystanders, and
control your line of fire.

9.
Store Guns Safely. When not in use,
unloaded firearms should be stored
separately from ammunition. All should be
kept out of reach of children and
inexperienced users.

10.
No "Hunters Happy Hour"! Never consume
alcoholic beverages or other mood altering
drugs before or during hunting. The game
you bag just might be yourself!
