R. Boos Miniatures
The Art and The Artist

Hello,
Thank you for showing an interest in my work. I have been creating miniatures for about 15
years and have done this mostly as a hobby, therefore most of the pieces that I have made
are still in my own collection. Since I do this for the pure pleasure of creating a beautiful
miniature and having a one of a kind that nobody else in the world has, I try not to adhere to
any kind of a schedule. By doing this I believe that my pieces benefit immensely.
I belive that you will see by the photos that my pieces are very detailed and very accurate.
Most of these pieces are very labour intensive and this is the main reason that I do not sell
very many. It is this fact that allows me to devote the time and patience that is required to
produce the quality of my workmanship that I do. I personally am intrigued by detail and
accuracy in miniature. Some of my pieces have taken me a year or more to create, I even
created a 1/19th scale WW II German Mauser K98 rifle which took me two years to make.

The majority of my work is done completely by hand, the only power operated tools that I
use are a small benchtop,(old) Atlas precision lathe, a drill press, a cordless drill and a
dremel tool. All of my blades are hand hacksawed and filed out and hand sanded.
The majority of my fittings are also hand filed. A lot of the pieces are even hand drilled.

When making mini knives that consist of fittings, they are all drilled, epoxied, and pinned
so that there is little chance of them coming apart. I plan to have a nice piece for a long time.
When making anything that consists of bands or rings, they are made of solid material,
drilled and filed out to fit so there are no solders to come apart in the future.

To make blades I use o1 tool steel, stainless, chrome moly, and damascas. The damascas
that I use is material that I get from a knifemaker in Spruce Grove Alberta by the name of Emil Bucharsky. Therfore the damascas pieces that I make are somewhat limited.
In making fittings, I use brass, bronze, mild and stainless steels, (and on Japanese
some copper fittings). For handles I prefer to use natural material, like deer, moose,
and elk antler, as well as mastadon, elephant, and walrus ivory. I also use water buffalo
and exotic woods. I also do some carving and engraving, as well as heat blueing and
and acid etching for my damascas blades.

The prices are wholey dependant on how I feel about the finished piece, if I don't feel
100% satisfied with the finished piece, then the piece is not for sale, or the price reflects
this. My prices are also dependant on the customer's attitude.
