| Lou Diamond Phillips met with about eighty of his fans in Albuquerque Friday, May 14th for an impromptu get-together where he spoke of his acting career and his view of the business. He told several stories of the different sets he's been on. He told of how much fun he had on the set of Young Guns and he was injured on the set of Young Guns II, he told of how secure the set of Courage Under Fire was and touched on several topics during the talk, he told how Dustin Hoffman gave him hope when asked how important looks were in film. When asked how he felt about his celebrity status, his humble answer was startling and inspirational, he said, "With gratitude, I try to stay grounded. I have been blessed that I've had had billiant people keep me grounded." He went to relate how another celebrity advised him, "Don't get used to it because then you think it's normal." When he was asked about his greatest achievment, his answer brought a huge round of applause, he simply said, "My children." About the current state of the film business and said, "Sadly, a lot of movie making is being done by MBAs. They look for the numbers and they don't understand the craft." Concerning acting classes for the masses: "Acting class is fine, but some classes ... like where you lay on the floor and pretend you're a piece of bacon., well, I guess it's ok if anybody out there is casting for a piece of bacon. Go for it." He said this about acting: "We're here to entertain and touch people, to share in the human experience." He went on to say, "You can't get complacent about this career. It is a constant challenge and a constant frustration. You have to contribute to your own success." The best advice he ever received about acting. "It's always about the basics, like James Cagney said, 'Look 'em in the eye and tell 'em the truth." Kevin Spacey also told me, "You're trying too hard - relax." When asked about finding representationin LA, Mr Phillips responded, "It's a minefield out there. Everyone wants a winner. You need someone who believes in you, someone who will champion you. You have to be getting face time. You need to find out what's happening." In closing, Lou Diamond Phillips said, "Live life - draw from your experiences. Go through self discovery." He also addressed SAG members by saying, "Get involved, vote, be active." Mr. Phillips was quite pleasant in his attitude towards his fans, funny in his recollections and utterly charming during the entire evening. His presence was very homey and pleasing. His talk was the most enjoyable and relaxed ever attended by this writer. Thanx brother, for a memorable evening. |
