It is bound by Kangra district in the north, Mandi district in the north east, Bilaspur and Una districts in the south east and south respectively This district was made in 1972 by carving it out from the Kangra district. Area wise this district is the smallest in Himachal Pradesh.

From administrative view point,  the district has been divided into six developmental blocks viz. Hamirpur, Bhoranj, Nadaun, Bijhari, Sujanpur Tira and Tauni Devi.

It is well connected by roads from all sides but there is no railway line in the distt. It is on a busy highway, therefore, tourist coming from Shimla, Manali and Chandigarh to Kangra, Dharamsala, Nurpur, Dalhousie, Khajjiar and Chamba don’t find the wayside amenities anywhere in district Hamirpur.

Hamirpur is situated at lower elevation and comparatively warmer but has some hilly ranges covered with Pine forests. It is also the 100% literate district and has also got the highest female ratio in the state of Himachal Pradesh. There is no major tourist attraction in this distt. But some temples and historical places can be developed as tourist points.

History

This history of Hamirpur is closely associated with the Katoch dynasty. Hamirpur was the part of old Jallandhar-Trigarta empire. Panin referred to the people of this Kingdom as great warrious and fighters. The Katoch dynast became predominating during the period of Raja Hair Chand who ruled from 1700 A.D. to 1740 A.D. It was Raja Hamir Chand who built the fort at Hamirpur and the present town derived its name from this ruler.
