Burial at sea after the 1 November Kamikaze attack in Leyte Gulf(6 Nov 1944). "Suddenly a Frances, which had just dropped a bomb resulting in a near miss and considerable underwater damage to the Killen on our port bow, turned and headed right for us. All possible fire was concentrated on him, and although our shells poured into him, he crashed into us, his left wing catching the corner of the flying bridge and each engine taking a stack with it as the plane spun between them. Credit enough cannot be given to those who stood by their stations without flinching, pouring out a steady stream of fire in a heroic attempt to stop this suicidal plunge. Particularly will we remember Girsham DowelI, SoM2c, Paul Drake, BM2c, Charles Helmer. SK1c. George Knapcik, QM3c, and Nelson Kossin, S1c, who gave their lives valiantly and without faltering, firing their guns into the Jap plane until the last moment when men and ship were enveloped. The plane's gas tanks exploded in a sheet of flame and caused injuries to Abla, Demory, Holden, Murdock, Shepard, Spagnola, Kaufman, Adje, DuPree, Louthan, Pena, Slaughter, Woodward, Arebalo, Gerourd, Malone, Scalf, R. H. Smith, Yancey, Bullion and Lieutenants Hundley, Usher and Ensign Tangney."(Taken from the USS AMMEN cruise book)
