| In my hand I have a pencil. I am writing on a sheet of paper. It helps to pass the time. My job is an unusual one and I meet lots of interesting people. Some of them are men and some of them are women. I am a man. Some of them are young and some of them are old. I am old. I have had this job all my life, since I can first remember. It is an interesting job because I meet lots of interesting people. I often talk to these interesting people. But they never answer me. I bring them news. Sometimes it is bad news. It is never good news. I stand here waiting, looking at the scenery. It helps to pass the time. In front of me I see flat meadows of green grass. There are no hills on the horizon. When I turn round I can see the same sight in the other direction. I am standing in the middle of a small road. I am waiting. It is my job. On my left the path extends for miles and miles and miles. It ends at an enormous building just on the horizon. The building is grey. It is enormous. And it frightens me. I am frightened of it. I have never been there and will never go there. But my job is concerned with it. In the other direction the path extends for miles and miles and miles. It ends at the horizon. On the horizon I can just make out some faint shapes. I think they are houses. There are probably more house behind them and even more behind them, but I don't know. I have never been there. That is the direction the people come from - the interesting people I meet in my interesting job. I can see two distant shapes gradually approaching. A long way behind them I can see another shape. Further back there may be more but they are too far away for me to see. They will walk until they reach me and I will speak to them and they will keep walking without stopping. But they will hear what I have said. They have to. It is very important to them. I don't know why. But they do. Sometimes I say to them, "Have a banana!" That is the worst. Their faces drop. That is what I must say to the next two people. It is my orders. It is my job. I am waiting here for them to come. It is a bleak day. It always is. I am writing. It helps to pass the time. I will write until I have filled the sheet of paper. Then I will not write. I will stand here and wait. Perhaps I will think. It may help to pass the time. I will wait until they reach me. I will say, "Have a banana!" They will know what it means. Then they will go. And I will wait for the next person. It is a cold day. The wind is chilly. The sun is hiding behind a little cloud. It helps to pass the time. My job is an interesting job. I meet many interesting people. Here they come. I will wait. Here they come. Have a banana! It helps to pass the time. I meet many interesting people. I am frightened of the big grey building. It helps to pass the time. My paper is filled. I will wait. |
