Netscape's new Navigator 3.0 browser will support digital certificates
from Versign, Inc. which are needed to authenticate the identity of the
browser owner which has useful applications in electronic commerce, secure
e-mail transmission etc. For more information on the many Navigator 3.0

Meanwhile, Verisign is dispensing client side digital certificates known as Digital ID for use with the new Netscape 3.0 browsers and existing Netscape 2.0 browsers. The Digital ID is like an electronic version of a driver's license with which users can identify themselves to web servers. VeriSign, Inc. is a spin-off company of RSA Data Security, the world leader in electronic cryptography.
Nortel (formerly Northern Telecom) is making available free web server certificates to allow webmasters to set up industry standards based security protocol such as SSL (a Netscape standard) and other HTTP-based security scheme for hooking up browsers.
Hewlett-Packard announced the availability of the Praesidium Authorization Server which allows webmasters to assign user access in corporate intranets. Terisa Systems Inc. will announce products that can help web developers to incorporate the SET (Secure Electronic Transactions) functionalities to their applications by using tool kits from Terisa.
