In the face of drastic funding cutbacks from the Ontario government, the Peel Region Board of Education is thinking of allowing corporations to advertise on school computer screens. Companies such as Mcdonald's, Pepsi and Trident have signed on to participate in the project. The initial trial which started in February this year is free to advertisers. However, if the school board decided to roll out the service, some 200 schools in the district with a total of 10,000 computers could be getting C$0.20 per screen per week. Advertisers are required to come up with motivational messages to promote education. For example, Pepsi's slogan is to ask students to "develop a thirst for knowledge." Despite the good intention of the Ontario educators, detractors
still think that such programs could encourage the government to further
shed its responsibility for providing education funding. |
