SICHUAN RESTAURANT REVIEWS
Chung King Restaurant
1000 S. San Gabriel Blvd., San Gabriel  626-286-0298
Type: Sichuan
Quality: !! Price: $-$$ Ambience: **

I went with a few non-Chinese speakers to this restaurant, so I was curious to see if the food would be that spicy.  I know only a little Mandarin, which I tried using.  Evidently, it fooled the staff.  When one of my friends asked for forks, they gave them to everyone except for me.  It turns out that my dish was also the spiciest.  I had ordered stir fried eel with pickled pepper (i.e Sichuan peppercorn) .  I don't think Sichuan is particularly known for eels, but I thought I'd give it a try anyway.   Yes, it was
plenty spicy.   I'm not completely sure if it was because they thought I was "old-country" Chinese, but I would guess so.   My friends ordered some other dishes that I thought were not quite as spicy.  But their frequent refills of ice water seem to indicate that they thought their dishes were more than spicy.  Overall, I thought the food had a great flavor, but it was a bit too oily and salty for me.
