Ichabod SHEFFIELD (82) was baptized 23/26Dec1630 at St. Peter's Parish, Sudbury, Suffolk, England. He was described as traveling to New England, with his three (3) brothers, on or about 1644 at the age of fourteen (14) years. On July 10, 1648 he was received in Portsmouth, Newport County, RI as a Freeman (he owned property and could vote), and was on a committee "for the tryall of the General Officers". At this time he was actually eighteen(18) years old, lacking five months. He appears on the Roll of Rhode Island Freeman in 1655 as of Portsmouth, where his name is incorrectly printed as "Fred Sheffield".In 1658 he was in Cocheco, Dover, Rockingham County, NH with his brother William and was taxed there that year. He soon returned to Portsmouth, Newport County, RI and on 25 April 1666 he was on a petit jury in Portsmouth, RI. On 3 June 1672 he was chosen Constable. On 12 October 1684 he was on a town committee regarding the town's title to its land. This appears to have been concerned with the threatened annulment of the Colony's Charter by the Home Government. On 9 April 1686 he was on a committee to devide the town's common lands. On 7 April 1686 he was chosen a member of the Portsmouth Town Council and on 13 February 1689/90 he was elected Deputy from Portsmouth to the Colonial Assembly to be held at Newport.
The following is from the records:
"Proceedings of the General Assembly held for the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations at Newport the 26th day of February 1689/90
