ANTARCTICA - JOURNEY TO THE ICE

Vasiliy Golovnin in Horseshoe Harbour, Mawson, Antarctica

Must be a parking spot here somewhere...

Station resupply occured over the last week of January. The Antarctic Division had leased the Russian icebreaker Vasiliy Golovnin to do the continental resupply job. The Vasiliy is 150 metres long, and getting it into Horseshoe harbour was a major logistical operation involving all station personell. Jetbarges, carried on the Vasiliy, were used as tugs to manouvre the ship into the harbour, and station personell operated zodiacs and manned the bollards to get the ship secured in place in the harbour. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when the operation was concluded succesfully.
