Antarctic stations need lots of power for heating, and typically this involves burning lots of diesel. At Mawson Station, there are two 300kW Wind Turbines installed to ease the demand on fossil fuels. These really are quite impressive structures, especially when you consider where they are. For scale purposes, in the above photo you can just see a person's head sticking out of the top of the turbine section. Yes, they are that big!
