ANTARCTICA - JOURNEY TO THE ICE

Mawson Station, Antarctica

Still a long way from everywhere...

Mawson Station, my home for the next year, lies on the coast of East Antarctica nestled near the base of the picturesque Framnes Mountains. It is 5200 kilometres south-west from Perth, due south of Iran, and closer to South Africa than it is to Australia. It is also one of the windiest places on the face of the earth, with a long-term mean windspeed of 38 knots (70km/hr). Mawson Station also has the longest unbroken climate record south of 60 degrees south. During Summer we have a period of roughly 6 weeks where the sun does not set, and conversely in Winter where the sun never rises for around 6 weeks.
