The plateau is not always snow free ice, often it is covered in a deep layer of snow. Due to the extreme winds, this snow almost invariably forms into drifts called sastrugi (pronounced 'sar-stroo-gee'). These sastrugi can be metres high, and present a major challenge to navigation. The sastrugi in the photo above where only about a foot high. The distant peak is Mt Horden, in the David Range.
