ANTARCTICA - JOURNEY TO THE ICE

Roping up for glacier travel, Ice Plateau, East Antarctica

Pretty Tied Up...

In the 1960's, the Russians used to use the Rumdoodle airstrip as a depot when flying between two of their stations on the Antarctic coast either side of Mawson. In December 1968, one of their Lisunov Li-2's (the Russian equivalent of a DC3) crashed on take off from the Rumdoodle strip. No one was hurt, and the aircraft was only slightly damaged, however before it could be fixed, it got blown away and totally destroyed in a fierce blizzard. It came to rest in a heavily crevassed area west north west of Rumdoodle. One nice evening, we decided to go up there and check it out. Travelling in unknown areas on the ice is very dangerous (especially when you know there are crevasses about), so we roped up to each other and travelled well apart and fully equiped for a crevasse rescue should one be required.
