ANTARCTICA - JOURNEY TO THE ICE

Curious Emperors at the Taylor Glacier Edge, East Antarctica

If only I spoke Emperorish...

I have frequently mentioned the curious nature of the Adelie Penguin. Multiply the curiosity, and the size of the bird, by 3 or 4 times, and you have the Emperor Penguin, the largest penguin in the world. They grow to over a metre tall, as clearly shown in the bottom image. This group spotted us on the sea ice whilst we were taking photos of the glacier edge and came over to see us. They got to about 3 or 4 metres away, which made for these fantastic photos. This was easily the pinnacle of my Antarctic experience to date. The Emperors genuinely seem to have human characteristics. Strangely, they make a trumpet sound very similar to that of elephants.
