On Buddha's Birthday

As I left a temple, built one thousand years ago, I looked back
To hundreds of shoes outside the main hall
Where hundreds were eating the birthday lunch of the Lord--
Farther back, hundred and thousands of shoes piled up
Millions farther back went on and on
In the mind's dim light, until they faded from my eye--

Under pink and yellow lotus shaped blue lanterns, the day's road
Stretched darkly before me,
A son cried in his father's arms, a bent-backed woman
Stepped sideways down the stone stairs, it began to rain
And The Voice sang... "The seed of man
Transmits the virus-war, the heart-mind of man contains the cure."

MIRROR

This is not still water
nor glass
but a looking
of mind
into the true face~

Fresh air
food, work
assigning fear
to oblivion
allowing a calm meadow
within~

Life is not
nearly so hard
nor mysterious
at all.

It only takes time, time
we all have that
to know
then love
who is looking

and who
is looking back.

"Buddha observed, "All beings tremble before violence. All fear death. All love life." I believe that while the human condition often gives rise to it, violence is basically wrong; our true nature is creative and peaceful. All living beings simply want to be; violence is against our true nature. It is usually when we are out of balance with what is true and good, that we create the conditions for violence to occur. That is something we can learn to stop in ourselves, our families, societies and the world. I believe that is the destiny of Humanity. It's the reason I offer this website. RaynRoberts
