Christmas comes but once a year, And when it comes it brings good cheer, A pocket full of money, and a cellar full of beer!
Here are a few Old English Rhymes from way,way back
Christmas is coming, The geese are getting fat, Please put a penny In the old man's hat. If you haven't got a penny, A ha'penny will do; If you haven't got a ha'penny, Then God bless you!
Dame, get up and bake your pies, bake your pies, bake your pies; Dame, get up and bake your pies, On Christmas day in the morning. Dame, what makes your maidens lie, Maidens lie, maidens lie; Dame, what makes your maidens lie, On Christmas day in the morning? Dame, what makes your ducks to die, Ducks to die, ducks to die; Dame, what makes your ducks to die, On Christmas day in the morning? Their wings are cut and they cannot fly, Cannot fly, cannot fly; Their wings are cut and they cannot fly, On Christmas day in the morning.
Keeping Christmas. How will you your Christmas keep? Feasting, fasting, or asleep? Will you laugh or will you pray, Or will you forget the day? Be it kept with joy or pray'r, Keep of either some to spare; Whatsoever brings the day, Do not keep but give away.
"Without the door let sorrow lie, And if for cold it hap to die We'll bury it in a Christmas pie And evermore be merry." (written 1622)
Christmas Pie. Lo! now is come our joyfull'st feast! let every man jolly; Each room with ivy leaves is dressed, And every post with holly. Now all our neighbours chimneys smoke, And Christmas blocks are burning; Their ovens they with bakemeats choke, And all their spits are turning. Without the door let sorrow lie, And if for cold it hap to die, We'll bury it in a Christmas pie, And ever more be merry.
St Thomas's Day is past and gone, And Christmas almost come, Maidens arise, And make your pies, And save young Bobby some.
Old English folklore: The bees hum a carol in honour of the birth of Jesus, and it's good to wish the bees a Merry Christmas by placing a sprig of holly on the hive. Young maidens placed holly under their pillow to dream of their true love.
God bless the master of this house, And its good mistress too, And all the little children That round the table go; And all your kin and kinsmen, That dwell both far and near; We wish you a merry Christmas And a happy New Year.
