Removable Hard Drive Enclosures

I was inspired by the removable drive bay review on www.makeitsimple.com, so one day I set out to give it a try. I bought three "Mobile Racks" at a computer show for $13 each.

The model I bought is a Mobile Rack VP-10KF-66. It has an IDE interface, key-lock, rear side cooling fan, and is UDMA-66 compatible.

The Mobile Rack caddies advertised the "option" of removing the front plastic grill to accommodate a ZIP drive, or similarly sized drives. This feature, however, is a destructive modification.

Installing the Zip drive didn't leave much room for the cables. I removed the circuit board with the connector temporarily and pulled the power supply wires to accommodate the drive. It was still too long for the front to be flush with the front of the caddy, but not too long that it interfered with the handle..
