DUG DUG'S IN '66!

LOS DUG DUG'S VS. LOS OVNIS? (The following article, originally published in MEXICO CANTA in late 1966, should be taken with a grain of salt! According to Armando Nava, there's never been any rivalry between the two bands -- in fact, lead Ovni Armando Vasquez has sat in on many Dug Dug's jam sessions! Therefore, what we have here is a classic, and quite funny, example of the Mexican rock & roll hype machine in action! I don't quite know what the writers had in mind when they came up with this phony war, but I do hope nobody got hurt! By running this piece, EL MUNDO LOCO means no offense to Los Ovnis or their fans!) "They are so lousy! Los Ovnis should sell tamales, instead of being ridiculous singers. We haven't heard a worse band than them -- not even in the amateur contests." That's the opinion of Los Dug Dug's on Los Ovnis. Los Dug Dug's, one of the most successful bands to come along in Mexico recently, said exclusively to MEXICO CANTA, "We don't understand how they can be in the music business. Indeed, they are terrible! Each member is so bad -- there's not a single artist in the band. Their music only hurts our ears. A lot of credit should be given to the company who signed them -- they worked miracles in order to make them sound better than they are." LOS OVNIS Los Dug Dug's then proceeded to give an individual analysis of each member: "The drummer is the worst you can imagine. He can't play, he only hits the drums without any sense. I even tried to show him some tricks, but he couldn't even learn them! "The lead guitarist never plays anything original, all he does is steal licks from the Mexican or the foreign bands. He is so bad we can't find words to judge him! "The singer is a clown. If he sold tamales he would be broke. People can't stand him. He thinks he's so handsome, and he sounds like he has a vibrator in his throat! And he's a terrible dancer too, worse than our singer! Even I could teach him how to dance! "We can't deny that they are nice guys. However, they should stop torturing the listeners. They should quit. They have other talents but not in this field. If I had half my mouth, one eye, and played drums and lead guitar at the same time I would sound better then them. They even dare to criticize other bands, including us. Their most popular song is �La Ultima Vez' (�The Last Time' by the Rolling Stones), which is horrible. They are so bad that we playing our worst song (�Hanky Panky') sound better than them playing their best. "They should go to some of the cafes to see some music and try to learn something. If they did a show with other groups, they'd have to play at the end, because if they were the opening act, they would scare the audience!"
