The legendary feud between Entertainment owner Vince McMahon and Stone Cold Steve Austin had spanned more than a year as WrestleMania XV rolled around. McMahon had tried everything not only to keep Austin from becoming champion, but also to physically and emotionally wreck Austin to the point where he would no longer be able to compete in a Federation ring. McMahon had chosen The Rock to be his champion, and it was he and Stone Cold who would battle it out at WrestleMania XV.
Mr. McMahon appointed himself special referee, but Commissioner Shawn Michaels overruled, saying a regular WWE official would do the job.
In the end, Austin obliterated The Rock with a Stunner, and walked away from WrestleMania XV as WWE Champion.
