INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC

Indian Classical music is basically divided into two segments - Carnatic, which is more popular and practised more in peninsular India and Hindustani, which is more at use in the northern half of India.

First let me talk about Carnatic Music. It basically has its songs written in any of the south Indian Languages of Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada or Tamil. Some great composers in the History of Carnatic Music would be Purandaradasar, Shama Shastrigal, Thyagaraja, & Muthuswamy Dikshitar. The last three are better known to the Music World as the TRINITY.

I am just trying to bring out my knowledge about these great composers here.

JAYADEVA (12th Century) Jayadeva was a great composer, poet and musician. He was on eof the royal poets during the reign of Maharaja Lakshmanasena, the last Hindu king of Bengal. Jayadeva lived in the middle or the end of the 12th Century AD.

The Celebrated song-book "Geeta Govinda" is an highly acclaimed masterpiece created by Jayadeva. The Gitagovinda inspired the Carnatic composers in South India and also a host of poets all over India who produced numerous imitations of Gitagovinda. The Gita Govinda uses the metaphor of "Lover and the Beloved" to explain the soul's relationship with God.
