As the political climate either stays the same or changes we still have troops overseas that appreciate even the smallest form of support. So whether you write a letter, contact soldiers via Yahoo Messenger, via email or send care packages, they will greatly appreciate it. I am compiling links and hopefully Yahoo ID's or email addies to specific people and ways to contact soldiers overseas for those of you who feel the same as I, I will also add guidelines for sending care packages. Whether or not you agree with the war in Iraq we must remember that the soldiers over there are not the policy makers, they must follow orders. And although there are a few bad apples most of the men and women over there are good people deserving of our show of support. So please do what you can when you can to help make a soldiers day a little brighter.

Guidelines for Sending Care Packages

When sending letters, cards or care packages we are no longer able to send them to "Any Service Member" must be sent to a specific soldier and military unit. Please also before putting together any care packages please visit
USPS-Military Mailing Restrictions also keep in mind that FedEx only ships to Bagdad

Care Package Items For Deployed Troops
The items below are not all inclusive, but seem to be the most requested items, and if anyone can think of anything to add, please let me know and I will gladly add it to this list. Other items that are not listed here may be included if they conform to prescribed postal service and host nation standards.

Do not send pressurized cans (shaving cream, cheese products, hair spray, etc.) Chocolates or other soft candies as they will likely melt; and no pornographic material, liquor producst or mass mailing or religious materials. The mailing of religious items to a single service member is permitted.

Please pay attention to the weight of your package. The more it weighs, the more it will cost to mail. Also, avoid large bulky items that take up alot of space. Because of the demand of assets, the military does not have alot of space for care packages as in the past.

Local Unit Information
Alabama National Guard Units in Iraq
The 279th is the unit in which one of my friends is in and the other two are sister battalions which all fall under the 142nd Signal Brigade

279th Signal Battalion is the only one that has a Website of their own as far as I can tell. Just click on the image of their crest.

Not sure if this information will help in getting in contact with any troops overseas, but hey it can't hurt right?

Books for Soldiers is a soldier support site that ships books, DVD's and supplies to deployed soldiers and VA hospitals, via their large network. If you have any old, but useable books, DVD's sitting around, they could help to make a soldiers day.

I will add more links as I find them or am sent them.
