| Godrics Hollow: Where it all began
By: Ariene Callahan In this issue of Witchs Weekly, I have compiled a brief but informative article on Godrics Hollow. As most of us in the wizarding world are aware, Godrics Hollow was the location of Lord Voldemorts attack on Lily and James Potter. However, what is the history behind this place? Who was it named after? Well my dear readers, I have finally uncovered the answers and I shall willingly share them with you! Godrics Hollow founded around the mid 1300s, is a small muggle village. It was home to the now famous, Bowman Wright, the inventor of the golden snitch. However some of the Hollows residents speculate that it was named after Godric Gryffindor, one of the five co-founders of Hogwarts. On the night of October 31, 1981 a quaint two-story cottage was the hiding place of Lily and James Potter and their one-year-old son, Harry. Just before midnight, the Potters were attacked and killed by one of the most feared wizards of all time, Lord Voldemort. Harry, as we all know escaped with only a lighting bolt-shaped scar. Little else is really known about this village. Godrics Hollow is said to be located somewhere in Wales, but no one yet has ever successfully been able to tell precisely the exact location. Could it be some strong magic that keeps Godrics Hollow away from prying eyes? We know that it exists, and those who come and go are never able to remember how they got there. But one thing we know for sure, Godrics Hollow is a major landmark to the wizarding world. In a way it has become a memorial dedicated to Lily and James Potter. Both perished at the hands of the dark lord, but the protection they bestowed upon their son is irrevocable. The cottage that once provided the Potters protection is but a barren spot of earth. There are no statues or signs anywhere depicting the events of that awful night, but the Potters will always be heroes, as well as the many other exemplary witches and wizards who have perished in the fight against good and evil. |
