Hartford, IL, November 24, 2000 (Water Tech Online) – Chemetco Inc., a
metal manufacturing company, and five employees were sentenced on
charges of conspiring to violate the federal Clean Water Act, one count of
making false statements to the US EPA and one count of making false
statements to the Army Corps of Engineers. A sixth employee charged in
the case still remains at large, according to authorities.
Chemetco was charged with using an illegal secret discharge pipe at the

discharge water contaminated with various pollutants into Long Lake, a
tributary of the Mississippi River. These contaminants, including lead,
can
make water undrinkable.
