Rats are the small animal world's best kept secret. Hidden behind stereotypes of disease, viciousness, and overall "yuck factor", rats have been given a horrible reputation. First the subject of germ carrying rats has to be dispelled. The rats of the Black Plague and the rats you see scurrying around in the subway are not the same rats domesticated as pets. Domesticated "pet" rats, often deemed "fancy rats" are the least likely of all small animals to bite. They can be litter trained and clean themselves similarly to that of a cat. Rats are as smart as a small dog and learn their names, tricks, commands, recognize their owner, and have good memories. They come in a multitude of colors such as white, black, beige, fawn, siamese, and even blue - which is more of a grey/blue color. There are even hairless and tailess rats.
