Thank you so much for this site dedicated to Elizabeth Hartman. I first became aware of her in 1982 as Mrs. Brisby in "The Secret of NIMH." Then I found out she had been in "Walking Tall" which was shot here in Henderson. I have since seen her in "A Patch of Blue." She was truly a great actress and will be missed. I am so very sorry about what happened to her. May she rest in peace.

I wanted you to know how excited I am to have come across this site. I first became aware of Elizabeth Hartman in 1978 when I watched "A Patch of Blue" on the late show and was totally mesmerized by her performance and the story. I distinctly remember the day after I watched that movie asking anybody if they knew what other films she had been in because I hadn't seen her in anything else that came to mind. All the reactions - if they knew who she was - was basically, "You know, I only saw her in maybe 2 movies after that." I would see her name when she did "Mornings at 7" (?) here in L.A. and just figured she was only doing stage and not films. Coming across her obituary in June of 1987 was one of the biggest shocks I had in quite sometime. I just couldn't believe it. This site shows that I'm not the only one who remembered her and admired her talent. I'm very happy to be a part of this congregation. If you have any suggestions as to how I may help out, don't hesitate to contact me. I'd be very happy to oblige. Chuck Moran August 5, 1997

I just learned about Elizabeth Hartman's death yesterday. I remembered how much I loved the character Mrs Brisby in "The Secret Of NIMH" when I was young. So I wanted to find out more about who did the voice of my favorite cartoon character. I was really sad to find out she committed suicide ten years ago. It's a shame, she had potential to have a great acting career. Her Golden Globe winning & Oscar nominated performance in "A Patch Of Blue" was excellent & will always be remembered. She touched me when I was young & I didn't even realize it until yesterday. Her voice in "The Secret Of NIMH" was excellently done. I hope somebody in Hollywood decides to make her life story as a feature film, & if it was up to me, I would cast Michelle Pfeiffer to play her because they both have great passion for their work & in life. I am glad to see Elizabeth Hartman has her own website & I encourage you to keep it up. I will tell everybody I know to come visit here. Madonna's Champion is my internet name, it came from when I was hyping "Evita" on the internet last year & it just kind of stuck. I'll talk to you again sometime, until then be in good cheer.

Thanks a lot for this site: I've been looking for *anything* about Elizabeth Hartman on the web every since I got on three years ago. I've been a big fan of hers ever since I first saw "A Patch of Blue" about nine years ago. I've since seen every one of her movies except "The Fixer", which is not available on video and never seems to be shown on TV. Her Selina is an amazing creation: sad but never pathetic, flowering when even the slightest affection is shown her, it's a role that easily could have been ruined by a lesser actress. That I still consider it among my favorites indicates that (in my eyes) she succeeded perfectly in bringing her to life. I'm also a big fan of "You're a Big Boy Now", which hasn't been much mentioned here. That the same actress could play Selina D'Arcy and her diametric opposite, Barbara Darling, and pull them both off, amazes me. Barbara is vain, nasty and probably crazy, but she has a groovy, with-it style that lets us see a decidedly different view of the fair Elizabeth. The scene where she sorta seduces the hero with "Darling Be Home Soon" playing in the background is among my favorite sixties film moments. As if these two films weren't enough, I also quite enjoy "The Beguiled", one of Clint Eastwood's more interesting early movies. Good ol' Clint, he was always willing to hire the interesting and talented (as opposed to bankable) women to co-star in his flicks.

Not long ago I saw "A Patch of Blue" for the first time.
I'd never heard of Elizabeth Hartman. After the movie
I wanted to find out all I could about her, which,
of course, turned out to be sad. Her performance as Selina
really touched me in a deep way. I was reminded of Sissy
Spacek in "Carrie"-- there was the same vulnerable yet
decent character: even the tonal quality in the two
actresses' voices was similar.

My favorite line in "A Patch of Blue" occurred after Gordon
helps her to navigate out of the park: they enjoy lunch
and laugh together: when he goes to leave, she says
"Thank you for my lovely day, Gordon." It's a heartfelt
line and heartbreaking, too.

I'm glad Rick set up this 'guestbook'. I'm certain this
'congregation' will be a dedicated flock. If anyone wants
to share comments regarding "A Patch of Blue" in particular
and Elizabeth Hartman in general, feel free to e-mail me.

As a young teenager I reluctantly sat down to watch an old
Black+White movie called "A Patch of Blue". My mother had been almost insistent in her urging me to watch it. I didn't want to disappoint her so I decided to gave it a try. So here I am, 20 years later, searching the Web for
Elizabeth Hartman. Talk about making an impression!
The only other movie I had seen her in was "The Beguiled", so I was thrilled to see a listing of her other
movies. I found another page that gives an in-depth look at her troubled life- go to address:
http://www.primenet.com/~allens/nimh/eh1.htm
If she only knew how deeply her acting touched people's lives maybe she would have found the will to carry on and be with us today. So sad.

I have wondered what happened to Elizabeth Hartman for many years now, and I thank you for providing the answer. When I found out today what happened to her, I felt deeply saddened. Because of her performance, "A Patch of Blue" has been one of my favorite movies since I became a film buff and first saw it maybe 25 years ago. It's gratifying to know that others feel about her the way that I do. She will always be sorely missed. God bless her and keep her.

I was 8 when I watched "A Patch of Blue" on TV in the 60's.
I was a freshman in high school when we read the book and saw
the film in English Lit class.

A couple of years ago I bought the video and watched again.
Oddly, I can't seem to stop and make all of my friends and
relatives watch it with me over and over. At this writing
I am awaiting a call from the music store for the soundtrack
which has been re-released. I cannot wait.

What is it that so compels? I think it is Elizabeth Hartman
and more, Sidney, Shelley, Jerry Goldsmith's lamenting music.
The dialogue is so real. The black and white rich with
metaphor. This movie evokes the eternal and its so painful
to learn Elizabeth Hartman is dead and I can't write and tell
her these things. This page is solace for same. Thank you.

Although I had seen "A Patch of Blue" as a very young child and was greatly affected by it, the film which really turned me on to Elizabeth Hartman was "You're A Big Boy Now," which I love so much I bought it on video. I've also seen "The Beguiled," "Walking Tall," and of course "The Secret Of Nimh," and I truly feel that Ms. Hartman was a beautiful actress, inside and out. She had a sort of ironic sexiness/innocence that was just so vulnerable, and I will never forget my disappointment upon learning of her death (five stories is a long way to fall), while trying to research her at the local library a few years ago. I am very excited about this website, because I finally got to learn a little about the personal life of this remarkable woman, and I couldn't find it anywhere else. Thank you so much, and may she shine in our minds and hearts forever.

I viewed the film many times when it was first released and have seen it many times since then. Five years ago I had the opportunity to research the film and Elizabeth Hartmam in particular. I interviewed a family member, the Editor of of the Youngstown Newspaper, friends, people from her early days in local theatre and many others. I accumulated quite a few articles about her.

A personvery close to Elizabeth described her as "A Delicate Flower." I believe it to be the best description that one could make of her. She battled her illness right up until the end. No one from Hollywood came to her funeral...

I got home from work last night and was flipping through channels when I came across "A Patch of Blue". Luckily I'd only missed about five or ten minutes of it. I was stuck to the TV until the movie ended. I had never heard of Elizabeth Hartman until last night... but after the movie I went to the Internet to find out more. At first I had a difficult time finding any information. Eventually, I found some web pages that had a decent amount of information. I was devastated and greatly saddened to discover that Elizabeth had died more than a decade ago. I had watched the movie in the context that she was still alive. Her performance in "A Patch of Blue" was excellent. My goal will be to see as many of her movies as possible. I think the best thing people can do now is to tell others about Elizabeth Hartman and her cinematic legacy. Also, if anyone has an address to some or all of her family, I'd be interested in receiving it. As I write this I am still in shock and sad. I already miss her. I thank those that have web pages for Elizabeth like this one. It was best said earlier: "May she shine in our hearts and minds forever."

First, I'd like to thank the owner of this site for putting it up.
It's truly a loving tribute to a beautiful and lovely actress
who had the ability to touch hearts and whose spirit in her films will
continue to touch hearts and souls for future generations.

I became aware of Ms. Hartman's work recently through a late
night showing of "A Patch of Blue". Just like one of the guests
above, I was flipping thru' the channels and came upon the scene with
Selina and Gordon by the tree. Their conversation was so rich and deep
that I had to continue watching. I was memsmerized by the film that afterwards
I said I'd better buy this movie...it is so touching! Plus, I missed 5 or 10 mins
of it, but thought I had miss more and wanted to experience the film from
the beginning. Well, to say the least...I really *fell in love* with the movie.
I kept gushing to my friends how wonderful this movie was and someone mentioned
that Elizabeth was no longer with us. I was stunned and after reading about her story
and life thru' this site, I was truly saddened and quite depressed. Here my heart was
just enriched by Elizabeth's moving performance, and then to find out what happened to her
made me cry! " A Patch of Blue" once seen cannot be forgotten...

It's a solace to have this site to express our feelings on how Ms. Hartman touched
our lives. I hope and pray she is at peace now and that she realizes how her acting
talent (thru film, stage and voice (The Secret of Nimh) really touches the soul...
It is a truth that cannot be denied. Even though her life was short and she battled
an illness, the truth of the PURITY of her heart will always shine in her work and for future
generations! She will always be remembered for the courageous person that she was. I can only honour her now by trying to see
as many of her works as possible. May she shine in our hearts forever and in the
hearts of future generations! God Bless...

If anyone wishes to correspond with me, they may reach me at the above
email...

Thank You!

I chanced upon this while looking for information on Boardman High School, which is where I graduated in 1964. I went all through grade school and highschool with Bill Hartman and vaguely remember his two older sisters.

It was a kick when his sister, Elizabeth, began appearing in films -- I guess we all like to identify in some way with famous people." I seem to remember her nickname was "Bif," but I can't swear to that.

My mom mailed me a newspaper clipping about her death and I sent Billy a card expressing my sympathy.

I spoke to Billy briefly at our 25th and 30th Boardman High School reunions, in 1993 and 1998.

That was how I cam across this site, looking for news of a 35th BHS reunion.

Like so many others before me I discovered Elizabeth Hartman by chance while watching her first movie "A Patch of Blue". I actually turned the channel to look for something else to watch, but since there was nothing interesting on I came back to the movie and decided to give it a try. I can tell you in all honesty this is probably one of the best films that I have ever had the pleasure to watch, and Elizabeth must have been one of the great performers of her time.

However it saddens me to learn that she died more than a decade ago under such tragic circumstances. Hollywood lost a great talent and more importantly her long time and new found fans have lost a great inspiration.

May she find peace and happiness in Heaven.

I just became a fan of Elizabeth Hartman this year(1999), and it was "A Patch of Blue," that did it for me. I now want to find out about every person who was involved, from Elizabeth Hartman, to Elizabeth Kata, who wrote "Be Ready with Bells and Drums." Only two other movies of the 1960's have given me a similar reaction: 1)Up the Down Staircase, starring Sandy Dennis, and 2)The Knack...and how to get it, starring Michael Crawford & Rita Tushingham. Now more than before, I want to find a copy of "You're A Big Boy Now," but can't. I'm also updating info on her for the IMDb, and will continue to do so in the future. Check it out now.
