An Ace for Emily
We sit across from one another,
Empty table separtated
Waiting to engage the enemy,
In silence always agitated.
The cards are dealt,
No turning back,
I blink, you sneeze,
Time to attack.
Now bidding starts,
The game is on,
"1 spade", I say,
The game is on.
You say "4 spades",
A game bid! Wow!
I look at you in silent awe,
Our time is come, destroy them now.
And as your cards lie open,
On the table, across from me,
I break out in cold anger,
Which rains upon my glee.
It hits me like an open hand,
Like blood the truth is let,
I hoped you had more spades, my dear,
I think we will be set.
