The Indus script is not related to any later scripts. Both the Tamil
script and the devanagari most commonly used for writing Sanskrit
descend
from the Brahmi script, which in turn is based mostly on the Semitic
consonant alphabet (derived from the Egyptian hieroglyphs around 1600
BC
