Hi My knowledge of Linguistics particularly Phonology has gone a bit rusty. However I believe there are aspirated sound in Tamil but they are not phonemic like in Hindi or even Malayalam Sk etc. Since the days of Tokaappiyar (c. 500 BC) hey are taken as allophones of ptoper phonemes. And as such there are no separate symbols for them. One and the same symbol carries the different allophoines and the easpirated modes are dependent on the context. Thus the sound "ka;' which is a phoneme can be read also as "kha, ga, Ha" and so forth. In this way the NeduGkaNNakku, the Tamil script was spared the many extra symbols many Indian languages have Loga rasoolpuri wrote: Dear Dr Loga Are their aspirated sounds in dravidian languages like Hindhi Bh 'Ph/Th etc 1
