The Celtic People, who lived more than two thousand years ago in the British Isles believed that tne spirits of those who had die during the past year walked the earth on the night of October 31. Since All Hallows was celebrated on the firdt of November, October 31 was Known as  All Hallows' Eve or Halloween. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Scotch and Irish Immigrants brought their traditions of All Hallows' Eve with them to America. In the British Isles People carved Jack-o'-lanters out of beets, potatoes, and turnips. Once the custom was brought to America, pumpkins began to be used. American children put on masks at Halloween to "scare"their neighbors or play tricks on them. Not until to 1940s and 1950s did people begin to offer treats to their  costumed visitors.
