The International Seminar on 'Wise Use and Sustainable Management of Peatland', Narathiwas, Thailand
The Seminar was held on 9-11 April 2003 in Narathiwas, Southern Thailand. It was jointly organized by the Pikulthong Royal Development Study Center, Royal Forest Department Thailand,  Wetlands International Thailand Programme, Global Environment Centre Malaysia, and Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant, Thailand. 47 people representing the government agencies and the non-governmental organizations participated in the event.

The Seminar was conducted with the following objectives; namely
1. To promote cooperation amongst Southeast Asian nations for the protection and conservation of peatlands in S.E. Asia and the development of the ASEAN Peatland Management Initiative (APMI);
2.To exchange information, ideas and discuss 'Best Management Practice' within the region for the common 'Wise-use and sustainable management of peatland'; and
3.To explore further options for the enhancement of the local community participation in peatland resources conservation and wise-use, and development of eco-tourisms.

I attended this Seminar to meet with co-workers and those who have interests in managing the peat swamp forests of the ASEAN countries. The trip to Narathiwas was a memorable one because of the hospitality of the organisers and the friendly people whom I met. The Seminar itself was informative, inspiring and educational. I look forward to future encounters and networking with the participants of the Seminar.
