Base Camp Facilities in Klias
There exists a modest facility located in the northern part of the Klias Protection Forest  Reserve. It is provided by the Sabah Forestry Department to serve the needs and use of appointed researchers and scientists who would require daily trips and field outings to the study sites. Presently, a store/temporary shelter, a jetty and service/utility drain network have been constructed during the Phase I infrastructural development. Future activities will involve the construction of administration block, hostels and communal live-in area, staff accommodation, and an R&D laboratory. All these will be equipped with modern utilities, such as piped water, electricity and telecommunications facilities.

The base camp is easily accessible from the Kota Kinabalu-Beaufort Highway, which also forms section of the Trans-Borneo Link. Located 100km southwards of Kota Kinabalu, and 120km northwards of Bandar Brunei Darussalam, its strategic location has the potential to attract in-bound tourists, casual visitors and scientists alike to experience a sample of the unique peat swamp settings. There are plans in the pipeline to develop areas for recreation.

For the more active visitors, the unique peat swamp ecosystem promises an adventure that is unforgettable. There is a small network of demonstration/observation and monitoring plots already laid out in the Klias Forest Reserve. To get to the study sites, one would normally require an official clearance from the Sabah Forestry Department.
