| StarFox Adventures Impressions Ryan Reynolds - Impressions - 5/09/02 UPDATE - 5.09.02 After leaving off at that point I had to go back for more StarFox Adventures. I got back up to the point I was at when I left off. I then figured out how to use the staff to shoot things. I saw an icon above the locked door and shot it with the staff and voila! The door magically opened. I entered the door and what did I find? Two enemies holding a baby triceratops prisoner. Fox then forced the two enemies to let it go and they fled on something that looked like a hovering snowmobile. Fox hopped on the extra and trailed off in pursuit. I then was set in control of Fox and I started my pursuit. On the way there was many obstacles to dodge such as trees, hills and logs. The enemies also conveniently left mines for me. I caught up to the first baddy and took him out by ramming him several times. He was put away and burst into a nice ball of fire. I then started to catch the next one but unfortunately that was the end of the road for me. The dino's came to a stop and knocked me out for a game over... This whole time I was observing the graphics. The textures are perfect. You will not find on stray polygon in this Rareware project. Next I noticed that Zelda style controls are just great. The system works perfectly and is very easy to adapt too. The controls are very responsive but the number of enemies makes it so you can't usually go too crazy on the combos, which is a good thing. Once in a while you will get the time and teach an enemy dinosaur a lesson. The controls while driving were also very easy. A was used to accelerate and B was the brake. The framerate remained constant, which I was very glad to see. Next I got to spend some time with one of the Arwing levels. I was almost instantly set into the Arwing and I was flying through space. The objective I was set to do was to fly through 7 gold rings. I got up to 4 when I died. I also encountered silver rings, which I am not sure of their purpose. The shooting is very quick and is fun. There are plenty of things to shoot including enemies and floating mines. The Arwing level pleased me as well. The graphics are very bright and again has a solid and smooth framerate. The graphics aren't out of this world but do a nice job maintaining a classic feel. Could we be seeing a similar classic feel in StarFox: Armada? The controls again are very simple. Use the control stick to navigate around and use the A button to shoot. The Arwing level overall was satisfying and maintains the classic StarFox shooter feel. The more time I get with StarFox Adventures the better it gets. I get to explore more and it makes me want the game to be released sooner and sooner. Thank God for that one-week move up right? StarFox Adventures just keeps getting better and better. The graphics could not be improved anymore that they have and you can see the amount of polish Rareware put into this one. The new Zelda style gameplay mixed with the classic StarFox feel comes together to make what looks to be yet another great title from Rareware and the deepest StarFox yet. My time with StarFox Adventures keeps making September 23rd feel farther and farther away. Written on 14.08.02 Recently, Ryan Reynolds got the chance to play Starfox Adventures! However with the quality of Super Mario Sunshine alluring him to its charms, Ryan only got to play SFA in short sessions. Here are his top-notch impressions of the game! When you start the StarFox Adventures demo you are given 15 or 20 minutes play time. When you get to the StarFox main screen you have to chose between the full game, 3 levels and the Arwing level. The first time I played I chose the full game. I was then treated to a little FMV of Krystal flying on a pterodactyl's back. Then she was shot at and it turned out to be General Scales ship. You then have to do battle with the ship while on the pterodactyls back. After winning the battle you get to explore the ship. There isn't much on the ship except a little exploring and no enemies. You then get treated to another FMV where you are introduced to General Scales. One thing that I didn't expect is that Krystal and General Scales don't speak English. They seem to speak their own language. I then stopped playing and went back to Super Mario Sunshine. Now how was the adventure? It was pretty good. The flying controls are very easy. Use the control stick to move and the A button to fire. However, while on the ship it was pretty boring. You have no weapon and there are no enemies to face. So the experience with Krystal I had isn't really what StarFox Adventures is about. But it was pretty enjoyable. I soon returned to StarFox Adventures. This time I wise up and chose one of the levels instead of following the game. It is very hard to play a full game on a demo disc. It is pointless. So I chose a level and was happy to see that I was Fox McCloud. I had the staff and I was ready to rock n roll. I then was treated to another cut scene of two enemy dinosaurs poking at a baby dinosaur. I then got control and explored the area. I walked a head and realized that the two enemy dinosaurs were in some kind of barricade. I then explored some more and picked up some items such as eggs and fuel cells for my Arwing. Then I found an explosive barrel. I used it to blow down a false wall and collect a hidden item. I went back to where I found the barrel and there was another barrel. When you take one the floor opens up and another one comes through. This time I threw the explosive at the enemy's blockade. It blew up and the enemies were now vulnerable. I ran in and showed the dinos who was boss using my staff. Destroying both enemies resulted in the unlocking of a nearby door. I then had to back to Super Mario Sunshine. Now that I think about it I wish I had gone on in StarFox Adventures. The game is very entertaining and fun. The Zelda 64 style controls fit the game very nicely. I really hope that StarFox Adventures does not feature a lot of mini games like the flying with Krystal one. They are fun but the regular game is better. Either way I cannot wait to play StarFox Adventures September 23rd. StarFox Adventures is yet another GameCube exclusive epic that you cannot miss. |
