News - Ryan's View Of Rare's Departure

NOTE: The following opinions do not automaticallyrepresent Rarewhere as a whole, as other staff members have different opinions. This is simply the views of the writer.

As more details of the official Rareware deal emerge more emotions also emerge. Apparently the deal came to be like this. By the way, this is the "official story" as far as I know...

Over a year ago Nintendo had the chance to purchase the whole package of Rare. Nintendo could have owned all 100% of the developer. Since Rare's overall profits were down to 1.5%, Nintendo declined the offer. Rare continued to work only on Nintendo GameCube titles. This is where it gets bad for Nintendo fans. Soon enough Nintendo sold back all of their 49% of the developer back to Rare themselves. Rare then started looking for a buyer to support them while still collaborating with Nintendo on StarFox Adventures. Activision and Microsoft jumped into talks with Rare soon enough. Sooner or later Microsoft outbid Activision and that brings us up to now.

Now lets get into the details about the deal. Reports differ saying that Nintendo got between 250-500 million euros out of the deal. Donkey Kong, StarFox Adventures and Diddy Kong have all been confirmed to be staying Nintendo exclusive. Rarewhere's sources say that Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie and Conker were all sold by Nintendo back to Rare. The licensing part of the deal is still not confirmed though. So that leaves licenses like Killer Instinct, Blast Corps., Battletoads and Jet Force Gemini uncalled for. Please remember neither Nintendo nor Rare has commented on any licenses except for Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong and StarFox.

Now we are left with the remains. Nintendo has said that the next Donkey Kong title has been taken in internally at Nintendo and is currently being worked on by Nintendo. So was this a smart move or an Iwata-San flub up? We will have to wait and see.

Stay tuned to Rarewhere for more details, confirmations and all the news.
