Rare: Make Believe

In this editorial, I take a look at all the rumoured Rare games and give a little insight to what they might be like.

Killer Instinct 3
This was unofficially confirmed by a European GCN website, and since then every Cube website on the planet has offered their opinion on it. Just imagine Killer Instinct running at 60 FPS, with Rare's magic thrown in and you have a killer app. This game has been wanted for ages, and if CubeNation aren't lying, this could be a very popular title between Nintendo owners. KI 1&2 weren't as good as the Tekken games, but with super-coders Rare behind them, KI3 could well turn out better Tekken and Soul Calibre put together. Just wait for this title, it's inevitable that Rare will make it to please all their whining fans, including me.

The possibilities: Full 3D fighting, interactive environments, new range of characters on top of old ones, brilliant graphics, new gameplay mechanics, that may include a story-mode.

Banjo Kazooie 3
At the end of Banjo Tooie while Banjo and Mumbo kicked around Grunty's head, they mentioned something about Banjo Kazooie 3. Most gamers thought that we'd see a Banjo Gamecube title, but instead we got Banjo Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge. While we wait in anticipation for that game, we must wonder if Rare will get their act together and make a Banjo Cubed game. Don?t expect this game anytime soon though. Rare have never announced anything to do with Banjo 3, nor has there even been a rumour surrounding it. And with Rare working so hard on Kameo, Donkey Kong Racing and especially Starfox Adventures, this game could be as far off as 2004.

The possibilities: Huge boss battles with no slowdown, no framerate problems, original and stunning worlds, heaps more characters, bigger worlds, more items and better varied challenges, great multi-player mode, Banjo Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge backwards capabilities, the swap 'n' stop mystery answered!

Donkey Kong Cubed
This game is a must for Rare. They not only took over the DK franchise and bettered it, they also developed the DKC series, one of the most popular video games series ever made. Following those games was Donkey Kong 64, a hugely engrossing game that never seemed to end. It was that good. It still sits in my top 3 games of all time, and will continue to until Rare releases a sequel, which will almost definitely be better. Imagine the things Rare could do with the DK series on GCN. Imagine guiding Diddy with his jetpack on through lush jungles, with waterfalls in the background, and endless environments teeming with life. Imagine taking a swim in a water level as good as the real thing. This could all be achievable on the Gamecube, only with Rare behind it.

The possibilities:
Huge, original and natural worlds, fully interactive and filled with enemies and characters. More originality in game challenges. No longer a treasure hunt, you'll have to earn your rewards, just like Conkers' s BFD. The whole DK gang, including all your favourites from the SNES games like Kiddy and Dixie. End of world bosses that really test your skills. Stunning environments running at 60 FPS.

Conkers Other Bad Fur Day
The first game was a winner. With a lot more publicity and a much powerful console behind it, Conkers Other Bad Fur Day will be an even bigger success. Conkers Bad Fur Day on the N64 was the best game to come out of the console in its last year of life. It mixed humour, challenging gameplay, original design excellent graphics in a game that should be held high by all Nintendo fans. It was just what Nintendo needed to make all those "Nintendo is too Kiddie" losers shut their mouths. Now with the awesome power of the Gamecube, COBFD would definitely be a hit. The though of highly detailed spew pouring from Conkers mouth at 60 fps in 24bit colour is extremely appealing.

The possibilities: Much, much longer. Bigger levels, more things to collect and better real time effects. Heaps of speech, more characters, and maybe even end of world bosses. A fantastic multiplayer mode, even better than the original. Maybe the game will be a prequel, because of the unusual ending to CBFD.

As you can see, there are endless possibilities for games that Rare could make. It is really a matter of time before at least 1 of these titles is developed. Expect to see at least 1 or 2 of these titles announced at one of the European game shows in 2002.
