Ethnic slurs and their comparative innocent origins…

Gringo , the Latin American insult for North American, has been traced back to a song often sung by the American troops as they invaded Mexico in the U.S.- Mexican War of 1848, “Green Grow the Lilacs”. Mexican civilians and troops heard the Americans singing the song as they marched or made camp and ran the two opening words together as gringo.
