SAVING MANATEES Navy researchers have contributed to a set of automatic gates, equipped with sensors like those on garage door openers, which are saving manatees in Florida. Manatees are big marine mammals, as much as 12 feet long, and weighing up to 1,500 pounds, who live in the warm water off Florida, but are often killed by boats' propellers or trapped in man-made structures. But the lock gates at Port Canaveral in Florida are equipped with 320 sensors which detect moving underwater objects, such as swimmers or manatees, and stop the gates from closing. During the time the Office of Naval Research was testing the sensors, five of the slow-moving manatees were saved from closing gates. The sensors rely on acoustic signals, like sonar does, to detect objects near the gates. A second-generation system is now in place, protecting these endangered mammals at the port.
