30's Racer... O.D.
'scratch built.Well its not exactly a racer, more of a cruiser, but great fun to fly. It has the right ingredient, big and light. It has been modified, and the new nose is shown below. The reason it got its new nose is because on one nice flying day, the fuselage landed about 30 second before the wing. How?. Well the wing was retained at the front by a dowel and the rear by a nylon bolt. The dowel was not securely glued in, (weight saving?, or stupidity?), and my technique to assembly was to stand the nose on the floor and slide the wing into the dowel hole. So I must have missed on that fateful day, push the wing in and pressed the dowel back into the wing. Getting the picture?. So I am happily flying around, (throwing it around), when the fuz and wing part company, I did a least throttle back on the way down, but it didn't seem to help. The wing continued 'flying'? or should I say auto rotated into the next field some 30 seconds later. Owing to a very light back end, (the planes not mine), and having little mass, except for a shorter nose the only damage to the rear was from the push rods stopping after the tail had, and ripping the horns off. Any way, I fancied a slimmer nose, honest.
Well the wing came off again, along with a chunk of fuselarge, probably had a split in the balsa from a previous excursion. This time there was too much damage. She flew a treat, was a pleasure to take out and show off. She was one of those planes that you always wanted to take with you. Sadly missed. |
