The story is set in the 1960s in an office building, where the men were the business tycoons and women were their secretaries attending to their every need (Thank the lord it is not this way now.) The story starts out with J. Peirpont Finch, who is a window washer. He has a book called "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" (hence the name of the production.) By following the steps in the book, he slowly climbs up the corporate ladder, starting in the mail room. Rosemary falls instantly in love with Finch and wants to marry him. She makes immediate plans for this. She begins to charm her way in to his life -- with a little help from her friend Smitty. You then basically follow Finch through his successes and failures as he makes it to the top, by brown-nosing, of course. He runs into a bit of trouble when he is appointed vice-president of advertising, and needs to come up with a brilliant idea. After he is almost fired, he uses his charm and poise to convince the boss to keep him. In the end, of course, the guy always gets the job, and the girl.
