After initially being described in news reports as Whipple's "roommate", Smith made sure that everyone knew she and Whipple were life partners who loved each other deeply. Smith has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the owners of the dogs, but the lawsuit is likely to fail because the two women are not considered spouses under California law.
